McCormick-Deering Farmall series – the first row-crop tractors: Farmall Regular, F-12, F-14 and F-20 from Rock Island, four-cylinders with 11 to 18 kW on kerosene or petrol
The Farmall series comprises International Harvester's first row-crop tractors under the McCormick-Deering brand: the Farmall Regular, introduced in 1924, and the F-12, F-14 and F-20 models that followed in the 1930s. They were built at the Farmall Works in Rock Island, Illinois, a plant erected specifically for this new class of tractor. The Farmall Regular is regarded as the first commercially successful row-crop tractor with a narrow front axle and high ground clearance, the first machine to combine draft work with the cultivation of growing row crops such as maize and cotton. The F-12 and F-20 followed as smaller and larger developments, with the F-14 a later revision of the F-12.

The register lists 4 versions with 11 to 17.7 kW from four-cylinders with 1,853 to 3,620 cm³ displacement. Unladen weights range from 1,225 to 1,792 kg, lengths from 3,124 to 3,556 mm, widths from 1,880 to 2,203 mm, and heights from 1,702 to 2,159 mm; rated speeds lie between 1,200 and 1,650 rpm.
With the row-crop concept, the Farmall series fundamentally changed American agriculture, as a single tractor could handle ploughing, sowing and cultivation of row crops, increasingly displacing working horses. The series also established the Farmall name, still known today, as a tractor brand in its own right within International Harvester.
On these early row-crop tractors, the condition of the cylinder head, carburettor and fuel system suited to kerosene or petrol, wear on the narrow front axle and steering, and cracks in the cast iron of the engine block and gearbox housing all matter. Spare parts come mainly from specialist Farmall and vintage-tractor parts dealers.
