Massey-Harris (1941–1958) – the Canadian tractors before Massey Ferguson: M-H 20 to 55, 81 and 82, 333 to 555, petrol, kerosene and diesel, 16 to 42 kW

Massey-Harris of Toronto was, before the merger with Harry Ferguson in 1953, the largest farm-machinery maker in the British Empire and, with the self-propelled combine of 1938, a pioneer of harvesting technology. The tractors in the register date from 1941 to 1958: the 81 and 82 of the war years, the numbered series 20, 22, 30, 33, 44 and 55 from 1946 – the 44 with over 90,000 units the most-built model – and the three-digit 333, 444 and 555 of 1956 to 1958 as the last generation before the brand merged into Massey Ferguson in 1958. The number orders the size class in ascending order, Special marks an equipment variant, 44/6 the six-cylinder of the 44 class.

The fuels reflect North American practice of the time: many models were offered for petrol, kerosene, diesel and LPG, and kerosene operation with carburettor preheating was common in Canada. The register lists 14 versions with 15.5 to 42.4 kW, 2,027 to 6,255 cm³ with four or six cylinders, unladen weights from 1,213 to 3,295 kg, lengths from 2,880 to 3,816 mm, widths from 1,429 to 1,930 mm and heights from 1,473 to 2,115 mm; rated speeds lie between 1,350 and 2,000 rpm.

The Massey-Harris tractors were known for their red sheet metal and the Continental and Massey's own engines; in Europe they were built in France (Marquette-lez-Lille) and England (Manchester), which explains their spread on the Continent.

Used M-H tractors are sought-after collector pieces; when buying, originality, engine condition, the availability of carburettor parts on petrol and kerosene engines and the completeness of sheet metal and accessories are what count.
