In the 1950s MAN built a series of agricultural diesel tractors under the MAN S designation before withdrawing from the tractor business. The register lists here five models from the 2S1 and 2S2 to the 4S1, 4S2 and 4S3, all with four-cylinder MAN diesel engines, including the D 0024 M 221 type.

In the 1950s several German industrial groups entered the fiercely competitive tractor market with their own agricultural diesels alongside established makers such as Deutz, Fendt and Eicher; MAN withdrew from the business again and focused on commercial vehicles and engines.
Surviving MAN S tractors count as rare collector's pieces; when buying, the condition of the injection pump and cooling system, engine tightness and completeness of attachments matter, since original spare parts are practically unobtainable from the manufacturer and have to be sourced through collector markets or new-made parts. The sale of the agricultural diesel division marked MAN's withdrawal from a market segment the group had occupied only briefly. The low production numbers of the MAN agricultural diesels also explain the rarity of surviving examples today compared with the large-volume manufacturers.
