MAN built diesel tractors in Nuremberg from 1921 to 1962 and is counted among the pioneers of four-wheel drive in the tractor business; the R range is among the last series before tractor production ended, when MAN handed the business to Fendt in 1962. The 2R1 to 4R3 models all carry four-cylinder diesel engines, one of which the register lists as a MAN D 0024 M 220; the 1,865 mm width is identical across all six versions, pointing to a shared axle and chassis for the whole range.

The R range served the Bavarian post-war reconstruction market, where MAN competed with Deutz, Hanomag, Eicher and Fendt for mid-size field tractors; with the sale of the tractor division to Fendt in 1962, MAN's independent tractor manufacture in Nuremberg came to an end.
On used tractors, the MAN diesel engine with injection pump, clutch and gearbox, hydraulics and linkage, brakes and sheet metal and frame for rust count; since the make has built no tractors for over six decades, parts now run only through specialists and collector markets.
