Lindner J 15: early mountain tractor from Kundl in Tyrol, built between 1949 and 1952, single-cylinder diesel of 1,506 cm³ with evaporative thermosiphon cooling, 8 hp at 1,500 rpm
Lindner, based in Kundl in Tyrol, was among the manufacturers that built simple, rugged tractors for small mountain farms in the first post-war years, when materials were scarce and demand for engine-driven traction in the alpine valleys was high. The J 15 is one of the earliest models from that period and was in the range from 1949 to 1952.

The single-cylinder diesel engine of 1,506 cm³ displacement uses evaporative thermosiphon cooling, meaning no water pump or fan, and produces 8 hp at 1,500 rpm. The gearbox offers four forward gears and one reverse, the PTO also turns at 1,500 rpm, and top speed is 10 km/h. The large displacement of 1,506 cm³ for just 8 hp shows how low-revving and gently this early single-cylinder unit was designed.
At just 10 km/h the J 15 clearly falls into licence class L. The simple cooling system with no moving parts was an advantage for small mountain holdings, as it needed little maintenance and was less prone to failure in rough terrain than a pumped water-cooling system, while the low PTO speed suited the slow-running, rugged implements of the period.
When buying such an early model, cooling is the main focus: thermosiphon systems without a circulation pump tend to develop air pockets and uneven cooling, which can show up as overheating marks on the cylinder head. The gearbox and clutch should also be checked for wear, the PTO bearing inspected, and it should be borne in mind that spare parts for this rare early model can now realistically only be found among collectors and vintage-tractor enthusiasts.
