Lanz Volldiesel (1955–1960) – the last Bulldogs: D 1106 to D 4016, the first digits as hp, one- and two-cylinder two-strokes with full diesel injection, the end of Mannheim under John Deere, 8 to 29 kW

Volldiesel is Lanz's name for the last Bulldog generation: from 1955 Mannheim replaced the medium-pressure Halbdiesel with full diesel injection – the engine remained the horizontal one- or two-cylinder two-stroke but started without preheating like any modern diesel. In 1956 John Deere took over Heinrich Lanz AG, and the Volldiesels ran until 1960 as the last tractors on the Bulldog principle before Deere switched Mannheim to multi-cylinder four-strokes. The type logic: the four-digit number gives the output in hp in its first two digits – D 1106 about 11 hp, D 1616 16 hp, D 2416 24 hp, D 2816 28 hp, D 4016 40 hp – and the version in the last two: 06 for plain equipment, 16 for the version with more gears and equipment, 02 and 12 for intermediate levels. The D 1106 to D 1666 are the single-cylinders, D 2402 to D 4016 the twins – the D 4016 with 4.2 litres from two cylinders at only 1,000 rpm the largest.

The register lists 10 versions with 8.1 to 29.3 kW (12 to 40 hp), 533 to 4,222 cm³ with one or two cylinders, rated speeds around 1,000 to 1,050 rpm, unladen weights from 770 to 2,650 kg, lengths from 2,440 to 3,380 mm, widths from 1,000 to 1,805 mm and heights from 1,385 to 1,930 mm – all diesel.

The Volldiesels are the full stop of a design that began in 1921: the slow-running big cylinder that burned any fuel and shaped the country roads with its beat – the D 1616 and D 2416 were the best-selling small Bulldogs and are today the brand's most accessible collector pieces.

On used tractors, the piston and cylinder of the two-stroke, a leak-free crankcase, injection pump, gearbox and originality count; the club scene and remanufacturers secure the parts.
