Landini has built tractors in Fabbrico near Reggio Emilia since 1884 and has belonged to the Italian Argo Group since 1994, which alongside Landini also runs McCormick and Valpadana. The R name goes back to the 1950s at Landini and was later reused for further ranges. The versions listed here, the R 8000 Special, R 8000 Super-Special and R-5000 Special, are three- and four-cylinder diesels, with Special and Super-Special marking equipment levels that differ mainly in power and fittings.

As mid-power standard farm tractors the R models competed with the contemporaneous Fiat and Same ranges, with which they shared technology and suppliers; on the Italian and eastern European markets Landini was in this class one of the familiar brands for the family farm.
On a used example, clutch and mechanical gearbox condition, rust on mudguards and bonnet, tightness of hydraulics and PTO, and smooth engine running under full load count; parts for the three- and four-cylinder diesels run through the Landini and Argo network and independent farm-machinery dealers.
