Landini, founded in 1884 by Giovanni Landini in Fabbrico near Reggio Emilia, ranks among Italy's oldest tractor makers and has, since the turn of the millennium, belonged to the Argo Tractors group, which also runs McCormick. The 500 range within the R series – R-5500, R-6500, R-7500, R-8500, R-9500 – orders the power class in ascending order through the last two digits, with DT marking four-wheel drive by Italian convention; each model additionally carries an internal TL code from type approval, noted in the register beside the model name. The engines run from a small three-cylinder to a large six-cylinder, showing the full breadth of this mid-sized range.

As mid-sized general-purpose tractors, the 500 range covered the segment of Italian family farms between the small orchard tractor and the large field tractor, competing with the comparable ranges of Same and Fiat/New Holland.
On used tractors, the condition of clutch and gearbox, leak-free hydraulics and PTO, the condition of four-wheel-drive hubs and rust on wings and cab count; parts supply runs through the Argo Tractors dealer network.
