The register lists 13 versions with four- and six-cylinder engines, kerb weights from 1,356 to 1,630 kg, gross vehicle weights from 1,920 to 2,163 kg and widths from 1,640 to 1,820 mm.

With its rugged box-section frame, aluminium bodywork and permanent four-wheel drive, the Series II established the Land Rover's reputation as an off-road working vehicle for agriculture, the military and expeditions worldwide; the short 88-inch wheelbase was seen as the more manoeuvrable alternative to the long 109, suited to off-road rather than haulage work.

When buying used, check for corrosion in the box-section frame beneath the aluminium body, the condition of the transfer case and freewheel hubs, engine and gearbox oil-tightness, and on Metal Top versions the fixing of the steel roof. Parts are well supported through specialist Land Rover restoration workshops, since chassis and drivetrain changed little over the decades.
