Within Lamborghini Trattori's R range, the R-956, R-1106, R-1306, R-1506 and R-1706 form the upper, exclusively six-cylinder group – unlike the smaller R models with three or four cylinders, these types cover the range's large field tractors. The DT suffix follows Italian convention for "Doppia Trazione", the four-wheel drive fitted on every model in the register; the four-digit number grows with engine size and power class from 956 to 1706. As with the smaller R models, the SAME Deutz-Fahr group pools the six-cylinder engine family across several brand ranges, which eases parts supply.

As large two-axle tractors, these R models occupied the upper market segment ahead of the articulated big tractors and competed directly with the large six-cylinder ranges of Fendt and Deutz-Fahr within the same group.
On used tractors, the condition of clutch, gearbox and drive shafts, leak-free hydraulics, lift and PTO, the condition of four-wheel-drive hubs and front axle, and rust on cab and wings count; parts supply runs through the SAME Deutz-Fahr dealer network.
