Kubota EK1-221: compact three-cylinder diesel with 16 kW for smaller farmland, fruit and vegetable growing, and municipal service
Like many Kubota models, the EK1-221 belongs to the class of compact multi-purpose tractors designed for smaller agricultural plots, fruit and vegetable growing, and municipal use. This size of machine is deliberately built for manoeuvrability and low weight, so that it can also work on soft or terraced ground without causing significant soil compaction.

The engine is a water-cooled three-cylinder diesel of 952 cm³ displacement, delivering 16 kW, or 22 hp, at 2,600 rpm. The front hydraulics lift up to 800 kg, and the design top speed is 20 km/h.
At a top speed of 20 km/h, the EK1-221 falls into driving licence category L. The small-displacement three-cylinder engine, at just over 300 cm³ per cylinder, is tuned for high revs rather than large pulling power, as is typical for mowers, rotary tillers and light transport work in narrow row crops. Water cooling also keeps the running temperature more even during longer tasks than an air-cooled engine of this size would allow.
When buying a used small tractor of this class, the checklist should include the PTO shaft for wear on the splines, the front hydraulics' hoses for cracks, and the tyres for even wear. The radiator should be checked for dirt build-up and leaks, since small cooling systems are more sensitive to leaves and dust than larger ones. Since such tractors often run continuously on small plots, the condition of the seat and controls frequently says more about actual use than the hour counter alone.
