The Kirov Plant (Kirovsky Zavod) in Leningrad, today's St Petersburg, launched the K-700 in 1962, the first series-built articulated tractor in the Soviet Union with four-wheel drive and hydraulic steering. The improved K-700A followed in the 1970s, and the more powerful K-701 with a larger engine joined the range; the letters M and P after the type number mark later modification stages of the K-701 line. The tractors went to collective and state farms for working large fields as well as to construction and transport firms.

The K-700 and its successors shaped large-scale farming in the Soviet Union and its successor states for decades and were also exported to Eastern Europe, Cuba and the Middle East; the articulated hydraulic steering and four-wheel drive on huge tyres were unusual for Western European tractors of the time and set a benchmark for later big tractors.
On a used purchase of these heavy articulated tractors, the condition of the articulation joint with its hydraulic rams and seals counts, the tightness of the hydrostatic steering, the condition of the injection pump and turbocharger of the eight- or twelve-cylinder engine, axles and final drives, and rust on the frame; parts run through dealers specialising in Soviet and Russian farm machinery.
