The Kirov Plant (Kirovsky Zavod) in Leningrad, today's St Petersburg, launched the K-700 in 1962, the first series-built articulated tractor in the Soviet Union with four-wheel drive and hydraulic steering. The improved K-700A followed in the 1970s, and the more powerful K-701 with a larger engine joined the range; the letters M and P after the type number mark later modification stages of the K-701 line. The tractors went to collective and state farms for working large fields as well as to construction and transport firms.
