Deutz Multitrac – air-cooled implement carrier with a two-cylinder diesel, 1.7-litre displacement and 18 hp from Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz (1955–1959).
Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz (KHD), based in Cologne, was known for its air-cooled diesel engines, which need no coolant and are therefore low-maintenance and frost-proof. The Multitrac, built between 1955 and 1959, belongs to the implement-carrier class: vehicles that can mount implements not only at the front and rear but also between the axles.

The air-cooled two-cylinder diesel engine, with a displacement of 1,700 cm³, delivers 18 hp at 1,800 rpm. With a wheelbase of 1,680 mm and a width of 1,690 mm, the Multitrac is compactly built, at 2,760 mm long and 1,580 mm tall, and reaches a top speed of 20.2 km/h.
Implement carriers such as the Multitrac were designed to carry an implement centrally between the axles, where the driver has a direct view of the working area – an advantage for cultivation and harvesting work in row crops, where precision matters more than high pulling power. Air cooling made the vehicle insensitive to frost and coolant loss, which was an advantage especially for year-round municipal use.
When buying a used Multitrac, the condition of the cooling fins and fan is critical, since contamination impairs the air cooling of the two-cylinder engine. The central implement mount between the axles should be checked for wear and play, as should the steering. Spare parts for this early Deutz model are today mainly available through specialist vintage-vehicle dealers.
