The XTZ-242 belongs to the XTZ-240 series from the Kharkov Tractor Plant and marks the top power class in the manufacturer's line-up. With an eight-cylinder engine, the plant adopts a drivetrain concept otherwise found in tractor building only in the very largest field tractors.

The water-cooled eight-cylinder diesel engine, with a displacement of 14,860 cm³, delivers 240 hp, or 176 kW, at 2,100 rpm. The hydraulics lift up to 5,000 kg. With a wheelbase of 2,860 mm and a width of 2,460 mm, the tractor reaches a length of 6,596 mm and a height of 3,565 mm – dimensions that clearly place the XTZ-242 in the class of the heaviest field tractors.
Eight-cylinder tractors of this size are built for professional work on large arable fields, where heavy cultivators, wide ploughs and large seeding equipment demand both high pulling force and high hydraulic lift capacity at the same time. The large displacement of nearly 15 litres allows high torque at moderate engine speed, which benefits fuel consumption and engine wear in continuous operation.
When buying a used XTZ-242, the condition of the cooling system for the large-volume eight-cylinder engine is particularly important, as are the hydraulic pumps given the high 5,000 kg lift capacity. The engine, turbocharger and injection system should be checked by a specialist workshop before taking on such a large and complex machine second-hand. Spare parts, being less widespread outside the manufacturer's home region, are not equally available everywhere.
