The 6020 series replaced the widespread 6010 models in 2001. The 6920 itself was built from 2002 to 2007. Its direct-injection six-cylinder displaces 6,788 cc, runs turbocharged with an intercooler and delivers 118 kW, or 160 hp.

Decisive for a used purchase is the transmission, because the range was offered with four: PowerQuad, AutoQuad Plus, EcoShift and the stepless AutoPowr. The top 6020 Premium Plus had the AutoPowr as standard.

Here lies the most important practical note: on the stepless 6920 AutoPowr, years before 2005 are not recommended. Until 2004 there were significant problems with the transmission control valves. Anyone examining an offer should therefore read transmission type and year together — an AutoPowr from 2003 and one from 2006 are economically two different machines.

Outwardly the range is recognisable by the then-new SG068 cab, which gave the four- and six-cylinder tractors a more modern appearance. It is a useful marker for telling a 6020 from its predecessor when the data plate is missing.

In this power class up to 117.8 kW, the three-point hitch was consistently built to category II, and the PTO was usually available in three speeds: 540, 1,000 and the fuel-saving 1,000E. Parts for the 6020 series remain well available through the John Deere dealer network, regardless of transmission type and model year.
