The 55 series belongs to John Deere's European production at the Mannheim plant, which JD acquired in 1956 along with Heinrich Lanz's company and has run ever since as its development and production site for the European market. The four-digit type designation orders the series class in the thousands digit and closes with the shared 55 suffix denoting the model generation; the A suffix marks the four-wheel-drive versions (2155A, 2355A, 2555A, 4555A) as against the standard rear-wheel-drive base models.

As a Mannheim-built series, the 55 range covered the mid-to-upper power spectrum of European arable farms and competed directly with the equivalent ranges from Fendt, Deutz-Fahr, Case IH and Massey Ferguson. The smaller three-cylinder models were found on mixed farms, the large six-cylinder four-wheel-drive versions in arable work and transport.
