John Deere 1520 to 7020 – the second generation of New Generation tractors from Waterloo, Iowa: 1520 and 2520 as three-cylinders, 4520 and 5020 as big six-cylinders, 7020 as the first four-wheel drive, 36 to 104 kW
With the 20 series, John Deere replaced the first New Generation range (1010 to 4010) in the mid-1960s and carried the modular principle forward: Deere's own diesel engines, staggered by cylinder count, built in the same Waterloo, Iowa plant. The model number grew with the engine size – the 1520 was the small three-cylinder for part-time farms, the 2520 its larger version, the 4520 the turbocharged six-cylinder for arable farms, the 5020 the range's strongest conventional two-axle tractor. With the 7020, Deere brought its first articulated four-wheel-drive tractor to market in 1971, topping off the 20 series and opening the way to the later 30 and 40 series.

The 20 series marks Deere's transition from the pure two-axle tractor to the articulated big tractor and remains, to this day, the reference for the sturdy first generation of the company's own six-cylinder diesels.
On used tractors, oil consumption and engine compression, the condition of hydraulic pump and PTO, rust on wings and sheet metal, and on the 7020 play in the articulation joint count; engine parts are well supplied through Deere's own dealer network.
