J.I. Case letter series (1929–1955) – C, L, R, S and V: the letter as size class, C for row crop, A for the revision, petrol and kerosene, 13 to 39 kW

The letter series is Case's tractor programme of the pre-war and post-war years, named by letters instead of numbers: the Model L of 1929 – a 6.6-litre four-cylinder for the prairie – and the Model C of the same year founded the range, R (1935) and V (1939) added the small classes, S (1941) the mid-range, and LA (1940) replaced the L. The appended letters explain the version: C for the row-crop version with closely spaced front wheels (CC, RC, SC, VC), A for the revised generation (LA, VA, VAC), I for the industrial version (SI), 3 on the CC-3 for the tricycle layout. The engines were Case's own four-cylinders, laid out for petrol, kerosene and distillate – the diesel engine only came to Case in 1953 with the Model 500.

The register lists 13 versions with 12.7 to 39.1 kW, 2,027 to 6,610 cm³ with four cylinders, rated speeds of 1,100 to 1,600 rpm, unladen weights from 1,073 to 3,457 kg, lengths from 2,718 to 3,556 mm, widths from 1,429 to 1,911 mm and heights from 1,118 to 1,561 mm; seven models run on petrol, the rest optionally on kerosene, propane or all-fuel.

With the letters Case introduced the Flambeau Red livery in 1939, which stayed into the 1960s; the Model VAC with about 70,000 units was the most-built Case of the range, the Model L the tractor that founded Case's reputation in the wheat belt.

Used letter-series tractors are American collector classics; when buying, originality, engine condition, carburettor and magneto, gearbox and the availability of sheet-metal parts, secured through remanufacturers, are what count.
