Trailers of this size fall into class O4 and carry, alongside the chipping unit, their own engine, an infeed system and often a crane for loading; they are used by forestry contractors, municipalities and energy-wood suppliers to process forest residues, thinnings or landscape-maintenance material into chips on site. The chipping drum or disc is usually driven by its own diesel engine, more rarely by the tractor's power take-off.

On used chippers, the condition of the knives and anvil or counter-blade, the operating hours of the drive engine, the condition of the infeed rollers and chain conveyor, crane operation, and the trailer's frame and running gear count; wear parts such as knives run through the manufacturer and specialist forestry-equipment dealers. A look at the service log shows how often the knives were turned or replaced, and the condition of the screen deck reveals neglect or the lack of it.
