Midi excavators of this weight class handle earthworks, trenching and cable and pipe laying on tighter sites, closing the gap between compact mini excavators and large standard excavators. Since production ended decades ago, surviving examples are found today mainly in North America, where the machines were originally most common.

When buying used, check the condition of the undercarriage and track tension, the tightness of the boom, arm and bucket cylinders, the condition of the slew ring and swing gearbox, and the mileage and service history of the diesel engine; since Ingersoll Rand has long since discontinued its construction-equipment division, spare parts can now only be sourced through specialist used-parts suppliers. Checking the nameplate and serial number also clarifies the exact year of manufacture, since identical models were built over several years with minor technical changes.
