The H1 is the civilian version of the HMMWV (Humvee), which AM General developed in Indiana for the US military and also offered as a road vehicle from 1992; General Motors bought the Hummer brand rights in 1999 and launched its own H2 model in 2002, based on the GMT800 platform shared with the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban. The model data on this page includes, among others, a Finnish registration as Avopakettiauto, the open flatbed or panel variant under the Finnish register class.

The register lists 28 versions with six- and eight-cylinder engines from 5,900 to 6,599 cm³ and 127 to 243 kW, kerb weights from 2,450 to 3,766 kg, gross vehicle weights from 3,500 to 4,676 kg, lengths from 4,600 to 5,800 mm and widths from 2,050 to 2,350 mm.

For over a decade Hummer occupied the US niche of exceptionally capable, wide off-roaders and pickups with a military look; General Motors discontinued the brand in 2010 amid the group's restructuring. The H1 is now considered a collector's vehicle demanding considerable technical know-how, while the H2 is seen as a more comfortably equipped road-going SUV with correspondingly lower off-road ability.

On the H1, check the condition of the portal axles, the diesel engine's injection pump and the central tyre-inflation system, along with the availability of military spare parts, which is increasingly scarce. On the H2, the condition of the automatic transmission, frame corrosion and the fuel consumption of the large eight-cylinder engines matter; body parts are mostly still available through the GM parts network.
