Hermann Lanz was a tractor manufacturer independent of Heinrich Lanz AG in Mannheim, based in Aalen. In the early 1950s the 47 series was among the smaller versions in the company's range, aimed at farms that needed a simple diesel tractor without large engine output.

The D 47 is powered by a water-cooled two-cylinder engine of 2,198 cc, running at either 1,500 or 1,600 rpm and producing 22 hp, or 16.1 kW. At a weight of 1,600 kg, a length of 2,900 mm, a height of 1,500 mm, a width of 1,540 mm and a wheelbase of 1,800 mm, the machine reaches a top speed of 20 km/h.
The two available engine speeds allowed a choice between the standardised PTO speed for driven implements and a higher speed for pure pulling work. A two-cylinder engine of this size was built for light to medium field work, not for heavy tillage of large areas. Its simple construction with few components made repairs straightforward under ordinary farm workshop conditions, an advantage for smaller operations without specialist tools.
When buying, the condition of the injection pump and injectors matters, along with the radiator and water pump for leaks. The gearbox, clutch and brakes should be checked for wear, and the frame for rust; spare parts for this small and now rare manufacturer are only available through a specialist circle of collectors.
