Lanz Halbdiesel – the last hot-bulb Bulldogs, 1952–1956: single cylinder, two-stroke and the four-digit type number

Halbdiesel ('semi-diesel') is Lanz's name for the Bulldogs of 1952 to 1956 that mark the transition from the classic hot-bulb engine to the full diesel. The engine remained the Mannheim single-cylinder two-stroke with the big horizontal cylinder that had defined the Bulldog since 1921 – now with medium-pressure injection, so that after a short warm-up it ran on diesel fuel and the blowlamp for starting was no longer needed. This made the Halbdiesel among the last tractors of their kind before John Deere, after taking over Lanz in 1956, switched to multi-cylinder full diesels.

The four-digit type number reads as a combination: the first digits give the power class in hp – 17, 19, 22, 28, 32, 36 – the last ones the version, such as field or road model and gearbox step. In the register the models run from 12.4 to 43.9 kW with 2,256 to 7,372 cm³ of displacement – all with a single cylinder – unladen weight lies between 1,310 and 3,920 kg, top speed between 14.5 and 30.8 km/h.

The huge single cylinders of over seven litres at low revs explain the Bulldog's characteristic slow beat and its pulling power from the bottom of the rev range.

Halbdiesel Bulldogs are sought-after collector pieces today. When buying, the piston and cylinder of the two-stroke, a leak-free crankcase, the radiator and originality count – many machines were kept running for decades with non-original parts.
