Halbdiesel ('semi-diesel') is Lanz's name for the Bulldogs of 1952 to 1956 that mark the transition from the classic hot-bulb engine to the full diesel. The engine remained the Mannheim single-cylinder two-stroke with the big horizontal cylinder that had defined the Bulldog since 1921 – now with medium-pressure injection, so that after a short warm-up it ran on diesel fuel and the blowlamp for starting was no longer needed. This made the Halbdiesel among the last tractors of their kind before John Deere, after taking over Lanz in 1956, switched to multi-cylinder full diesels.
