Articulated dump trucks of this size haul considerably larger loads in open-pit mines than standard construction-site ADTs, combining the off-road ability of the articulation joint with payloads otherwise reserved for rigid dump trucks. Like all dump trucks in this class, the 3900D is not road-registered and is built solely for operation on mine haul roads.

When buying used, the condition of the articulation joint and its bushings, the tightness of the tipping cylinders and the tyres, which on a machine this size are among the biggest running costs, are the key checks. The hours on the Caterpillar engine also say a lot about how the machine has been used. A look at the service history also helps judge the machine's real condition, since repair costs on equipment of this size are very high if problems are found late. Independent inspection of the tyres before purchase is money well spent given their cost.
