Hanomag's R-range small tractors competed directly with comparable ranges from Fendt, Deutz and Normag in the 1950s and were aimed at operations seeking a manoeuvrable, sturdy tractor for field and yard work without the purchase cost of a large field tractor.
On a used R-range Hanomag, rust on the frame and sheet-metal parts, the condition of the diesel engine's injection pump and injectors, the tightness of the hydraulics and lift linkage, and the condition of the axles and steering after decades of use all count; because production ended long ago, parts are mostly only available through specialist secondhand-parts dealers and salvaged vehicles.
