The R 430 is powered by a water-cooled three-cylinder diesel engine of 2,099 cc, producing 27 hp, or 20 kW, at 1,900 rpm. At a weight of 1,585 kg, a length of 2,720 mm, a height of 1,660 mm and a width of 1,580 mm, with a wheelbase of 1,700 mm, the machine is a light, agile tractor whose top speed of 19.5 km/h was sufficient for field work and road transport.
A three-cylinder engine sits between a simple single-cylinder and a smoother-running four-cylinder, combining comparatively low weight with enough smoothness for everyday use. A tractor of this power class was built for tillage on smaller and medium-sized plots, driving mounted implements through the pto shaft and light haulage, not for heavy draft work with large loads.
When buying an R 430, the condition of the radiator, water pump and coolant hoses matters, along with corrosion on the wings, bonnet and frame. Also worth checking are the clutch and gearbox for wear noises and the brakes; spare parts for this export series vary in availability by target market and are usually only obtainable from specialist suppliers.
