Hanomag, the Hannoversche Maschinenbau AG, was a German vehicle and machinery manufacturer based in Hanover. The bodywork styling of the Granit series of that period, which includes the 500/1 (S), was designed by the French industrial designer Louis Lepoix. The Granit 500/1 (S) was built from 1966 to 1968.

The Granit 500/1 (S) is powered by a water-cooled three-cylinder diesel engine of 2,099 cc, producing 40 hp, or 29 kW, at 2,400 rpm. At a weight of 2,100 kg, a length of 3,420 mm, a height of 1,540 mm and a width of 1,580 mm, with a wheelbase of 2,035 mm, the machine reaches a top speed of 20 km/h.
A three-cylinder diesel engine of just over two litres and 29 kW belonged, in the mid-1960s, to the upper mid-range of field tractors, suited to tillage with larger implements, trailer work and varied power-take-off tasks. Lepoix's rounded bodywork visually set the Granit apart from the manufacturer's more angular earlier series.
When buying a Granit 500/1 (S) secondhand, the condition of the injection pump and injectors of the three-cylinder diesel, and the cooling system of the water-cooled engine, matter most. Also worth checking are wear in the clutch and gearbox, the brakes, and the condition of the bodywork panels; spare parts for this common Hanomag series are usually still readily available on the open market.
