A four-cylinder diesel engine of over five litres and a weight of 4.6 tonnes place the KV 50 in the heavy class of field tractors of its era, well above an ordinary standard agricultural tractor. The very low top speed of only 7 km/h points to a gearbox geared entirely towards high drawbar pull at extremely slow travel, needed for hauling especially heavy loads or for working with towed heavy equipment, not for brisk road or field travel.
When buying a KV 50 secondhand, the condition of the frame and axles given the high weight, and the injection pump and injectors of the large four-cylinder diesel, matter most. Also worth checking are the radiator and water pump of the water-cooled engine, wear in the clutch and gearbox caused by the high drawbar forces transmitted, and the brakes; spare parts for such an old and heavy, low-volume machine are now only available through specialist suppliers.
