The R 228 is powered by a water-cooled two-cylinder diesel engine of 1,021 cc, producing 24 hp, or 18 kW, at 2,200 rpm. At a weight of 1,550 kg, a length of 3,100 mm, a height of 1,790 mm and a width of 1,600 mm, with a wheelbase of 1,960 mm, the machine reaches a top speed of 19.5 km/h.
A two-cylinder diesel engine of around a litre and 18 kW belonged, in the late 1950s, to the lower mid-range of field tractors, built for tillage on medium-sized land, trailer work and driving implements through the power take-off. The comparatively long 3,100 mm length combined with a moderate weight points to a design geared towards good accessibility and visibility when working with mounted implements.
When buying an R 228 secondhand, the condition of the injection pump and injectors of the two-cylinder diesel, and the radiator and water pump of the water-cooled engine, matter most. Also worth checking are wear in the clutch and gearbox and the brakes, along with the condition of the wheels and tyres after so many years of use; spare parts for this older Hanomag series are usually still available through specialist tractor parts dealers.
