Holder E300B/E300D: air-cooled single-cylinder compact tractor in block construction with 3-speed gearbox, 6.6 kW and only 75 kg weight, from 1980
Holder was a German maker of small single-axle and compact tractors based in Baden-Württemberg, building machines for commercial horticulture, viticulture and grounds maintenance. The E series comprised particularly light, single-axle small tractors offered in petrol or diesel form; the B designation stands for the petrol engine, D for the diesel.

The E300B/E300D is powered by an air-cooled single-cylinder engine of block construction, producing 9 hp, or 6.6 kW, at 3,600 rpm, running through a gearbox with three forward gears and one reverse. At a weight of only 75 kg, a length of 1,900 mm, a height of 540 mm and a width of 532 mm, with front tyres sized 4.00-10 in an agricultural cleat pattern, the machine is a very light single-axle tractor with a top speed of 11.9 km/h.
Block construction combines the engine, gearbox and axle in one compact unit without a frame, making such small tractors light and manoeuvrable and well suited to working between narrow rows of trees or on small, irregularly shaped plots, as found in horticulture and viticulture. The choice between petrol and diesel engines let operations pick a machine to suit fuel availability and the type of work.
When buying such an old and light single-axle tractor secondhand, the condition of the combined engine-gearbox-axle block matters most, since in the event of a fault these parts are replaced not individually but as a unit. Also worth checking are the tyres, clutch and brakes, and, on the diesel version, the injection pump; spare parts for Holder small tractors of this size are still available from specialist dealers.
