GAZ (Gorky Automobile Plant) of Nizhny Novgorod, founded in 1932 as a Soviet car works, built the GAZ-69 from 1953 as a military and civilian off-roader and the GAZ-63 from 1948 as a four-wheel-drive 2-tonne lorry; in some Western European vehicle registers the GAZ-69 is listed under the Jeep brand, as shown by the model names JEEP 69M-4X4 and JEEP 69ME-4X4 on this page.

Alongside UAZ and Lada, GAZ is one of the defining Soviet and Russian car makers, and with its range from light off-roaders to lorries and, with the GAZelle range, Russia's most widely built van, it covers a broad spectrum; the GAZ-69 and GAZ-63 served for decades with the military, agriculture and civil defence across the entire Eastern Bloc.
On the older GAZ models, rust on the frame and body, the condition of the propshafts and transfer case, the carburettor and electrics count, and on the GAZelle range additionally the condition of the engine, suspension and brakes under continuous commercial load; parts for the classics run mainly through specialist Eastern European dealers, and for the GAZelle through the regular GAZ network.
