Fruehauf is credited with inventing the semi-trailer: in 1914 August Fruehauf built the first trailer in Detroit to be towed by a motor vehicle instead of horses, founding an entirely new vehicle class. The ONCRK series states the gross weight in tonnes within its type number – ONCRK 22-110 stands for 22 t, ONCRK 39-327 for the heaviest version in the register at 39 t.

When buying one of these older chassis, check the frame and main beams particularly carefully for corrosion and cracks, as well as the axle assemblies, suspension and brake system with its connections. The kingpin and the wear plates of the bearing surface also belong on the checklist; spare parts for this era are generally only available through specialist commercial-vehicle workshops. Assessing the condition of the tyres and wheels also forms part of the basic inspection for these historic chassis.
