Fruehauf is regarded as the inventor of the semi-trailer: in 1914 Detroit blacksmith August Fruehauf built a trailer without its own front axle for lumber dealer Frederic Sibley, resting instead on the coupling of a towing vehicle; the success of this design led to the founding of the Fruehauf Trailer Company in 1918, which established modern semi-trailer building with the fifth-wheel coupling and the first flatbed, van, refrigerated and tandem semi-trailers. The ONCR range numbers its models with a two-part figure such as ONCR 20-110 A, ONCR 30-218 A or ONCR 47-330 A, which rises with the gross vehicle weight.

When buying used, the frame and kingpin deserve particular attention for corrosion, cracks and distortion, as do the axles, brakes and air suspension, along with the condition of the side panels or tarpaulin. Spare parts for older Fruehauf semi-trailers mostly come through independent commercial-vehicle workshops and the used-parts market.
