The 700 series tractors were aimed at larger arable farms and contractors, forming the backbone of Ford's large tractors in the 1970s and early 1980s, in competition with comparable series from Massey Ferguson, International Harvester and David Brown. Beyond Britain, tractors from Basildon also found numerous buyers across continental Europe and overseas.

On a used purchase of these large four- and six-cylinders, check operating hours and the service history of the injection pump, the condition of the clutch and gearbox, and the tightness of the hydraulics; corrosion on wings and cab frame is common on the older types, and parts run through independent Ford specialists.
