Ford was an American vehicle manufacturer whose tractor division built its own farm machinery before it was sold to the Italian Fiat group in 1991 and absorbed into New Holland. The 601 series was offered from 1958 as the successor to the previous Ford tractor generation, with the same basic tractor available, depending on version, with a petrol, LPG or diesel engine.

The 681 is powered by a water-cooled four-cylinder engine of 2,190 cc, producing 48.4 hp, or 35.6 kW, and 164 Nm of torque at 2,000 to 2,200 rpm. At a weight of 1,492 kg, a length of 3,069 mm, a height of 1,446 mm and a width of 1,623 mm, with a wheelbase of 1,892 mm, it is a medium-sized field tractor with a top speed of 28 km/h.

Offering the same tractor with three different fuel types allowed farms to match the drivetrain to whichever fuel supply was cheapest or most readily available; LPG engines were considered comparatively smooth-running and low in maintenance next to petrol engines of the same period. A four-cylinder tractor of this kind was used for tillage, trailer work and driving mounted implements through the power take-off.

When buying a Ford 681 secondhand, the first thing that matters is which of the three fuel types the particular machine runs on, since the carburettor, vaporiser or injection pump differ fundamentally and call for correspondingly different spare parts. Also worth checking are wear in the clutch and gearbox, the condition of the cooling system, and corrosion on sheet-metal and frame parts.
