Ford 2600 to 6600 (1975-1981) – the second generation of the British range from Basildon: the first digit as size class, three- and four-cylinder diesels, 28 to 57 kW, up to 3.25 t service weight
Ford's second '600 series' generation replaced the first Thousand range (2000 to 7000) from 1975 and, like it, was built at the British Basildon plant in Essex, which Ford had run since the 1960s as the centre of its European tractor manufacturing. The type logic orders the size by the first digit in ascending order: the 2600 is the smallest, the 6600 the largest machine in this selection, the 4100 stands as its own intermediate size, while the middle digit 6 marks the second generation against the zeros of the Thousand series. The smaller models run three-cylinder, the larger four-cylinder engines, throughout as direct-injection diesels.

The register lists 5 versions with engines of 2,588 to 4,188 cm³, outputs of 27.9 to 57.4 kW and rated speeds of 2,000 to 2,200 rpm. Service weights range from 1,731 to 3,250 kg, lengths from 3,226 to 3,651 mm, widths from 1,664 to 2,070 mm and heights from 2,248 to 2,540 mm.
The range covered the mid segment of European farm tractors at the time, between small compacts and the big field tractors of the 7000 and 8000 class; competition came chiefly from Massey Ferguson, International Harvester and the home-grown David Brown line. After 1981 the '10 Series' (2610 to 8210) succeeded this generation, with engine and gearbox surviving at their core.
On used tractors, operating hours, the condition of clutch and gearbox, hydraulic pump, linkage and PTO, rust on wings, brakes and front axle count, along with parts supply, which usually runs without problems through New Holland as legal successor to Ford Tractor Operations.
