Fiat crawler tractors C series – from the 25 C of 1951 to the 120 C: tracked tractors for vineyard, slope and paddy, 18 to 88 kW

The C in Fiat's type designation stands for cingolato, crawler: the C series gathers the tracked tractors with which Fiat Trattori dominated the Italian and southern European market for four decades. Crawler tractors were never a niche in Italy – on the slopes of Tuscany, in the vineyards of Piedmont and in the paddy fields of the Po plain, farmers needed traction and soil protection that wheeled tractors could not offer. The 25 C of 1951 was the first post-war crawler; it was followed by the 55 C, 411 C, 60 C, 70 C, 80 C and 90 C of the 1960s, the 311 C to 355 C from the Nastro d'Oro era and the 455 C to 805 C as well as the 120 C of the 1970s and 1980s.

Suffixes distinguish versions: CS for the narrow vineyard crawler (stretto), CI for the industrial or dozer version, Vigneto for the vineyard, L for the wider field version. In the register the models run from 18.4 to 88.3 kW, 1,728 to 7,412 cm³ with two to six cylinders, torque from 94 to 426 Nm, weights from 1,725 to 7,650 kg, lengths from 2,195 to 4,150 mm and widths from 1,040 to 2,015 mm – the narrowest Vigneto types fit between vine rows where no wheeled tractor can go.

The crawlers shared their engines with the wheeled tractors of the same generation; Fiat's crawler programme lived on after the merger with New Holland as the New Holland TK and is still built in Jesi today.

On used machines, undercarriage and tracks (wear of pins, bushings and rollers is the big cost item), steering clutches and brake bands, engine condition and, on old models, the availability of undercarriage parts are what count.
