The C in Fiat's type designation stands for cingolato, crawler: the C series gathers the tracked tractors with which Fiat Trattori dominated the Italian and southern European market for four decades. Crawler tractors were never a niche in Italy – on the slopes of Tuscany, in the vineyards of Piedmont and in the paddy fields of the Po plain, farmers needed traction and soil protection that wheeled tractors could not offer. The 25 C of 1951 was the first post-war crawler; it was followed by the 55 C, 411 C, 60 C, 70 C, 80 C and 90 C of the 1960s, the 311 C to 355 C from the Nastro d'Oro era and the 455 C to 805 C as well as the 120 C of the 1970s and 1980s.

Suffixes distinguish versions: CS for the narrow vineyard crawler (stretto), CI for the industrial or dozer version, Vigneto for the vineyard, L for the wider field version.
