Fiat was an Italian vehicle manufacturer based in Turin whose agricultural machinery division was among Europe's significant tractor makers before becoming independent as Fiatagri and later being absorbed into New Holland. Among Italian manufacturers, the designation DT stands for doppia trazione, meaning four-wheel drive; the 80-88 was offered both with and without it.

The Fiat 80-88 is powered by a water-cooled four-cylinder diesel engine of 3,908 cc, producing 80 hp, or 58.8 kW, and 267 Nm of torque at 2,500 rpm. At a weight of 3,430 kg, a length of 3,680 mm, a height of 2,610 mm and a width of 2,200 mm, the machine reaches a top speed of 38 km/h.
A four-cylinder diesel engine of nearly 3.9 litres and around 59 kW belonged, at the end of the 1980s, to the upper mid-range of field tractors, suited to tillage with larger implements and trailer work. The four-wheel-drive DT version improves traction on loose or sloping ground compared with the rear-wheel-drive version, for instance during spring tillage.
When buying a Fiat 80-88 in DT form secondhand, the condition of the front axle differential and the four-wheel-drive joints matters most, since these assemblies carry considerably higher loads than on a tractor without four-wheel drive. Also worth checking are the clutch and gearbox, the cooling system of the water-cooled engine, and the brakes; spare parts for this common series are readily available through the open parts trade.
