British engineer Harry Ferguson designed the TE 20, built from 1946 in Coventry, England, by the Standard Motor Company; its three-point hydraulic system, integrated into the tractor itself, became the model for the three-point linkage used worldwide today. The TE 20 was offered in both petrol and diesel versions.

The TE 20 is powered by a water-cooled four-cylinder engine of 1,966 cc, producing 24 hp, or 19.5 kW, at 1,750 rpm. At a weight of 1,251 kg, a length of 2,920 mm, a height of 1,320 mm and a width of 1,610 mm, it is a compact, lightweight tractor for small and medium-sized farms.
Ferguson's three-point hydraulic system raised implements through a top link and two lower links, transferring part of the drawbar resistance as extra downforce onto the rear axle, which improved traction without needing to make the tractor itself heavier. This design was subsequently adopted by virtually every tractor manufacturer, making the TE 20 one of the most influential designs in tractor history.
When buying a used TE 20, the condition of the three-point hydraulic system, together with its lift arms and links, matters most, since this assembly is the core of the design. Also worth checking are the radiator and water pump of the water-cooled engine, wear in the clutch and gearbox, and, on the diesel version, the injection pump; because of the large numbers built, spare parts are comparatively easy to find through specialist suppliers.
