Fendt is a German tractor manufacturer based in Marktoberdorf in the Allgäu region and has been part of the American AGCO corporation since 1997. The Vario series is known for its stepless hydrostatic-mechanical transmission, which Fendt brought into series production as early as the 1990s and which allows travel speed to be adjusted without a gear change.

The Vario 208 V/F is powered by a water-cooled three-cylinder diesel engine of 3,300 cc, designed to run on diesel or the RME biofuel, producing 70 hp, or 52 kW, and 337 Nm of torque at 2,100 rpm. At a weight of 2,780 kg, a length of 3,578 mm and a height of 2,390 mm, the most striking figure is a width of only 1,151 mm, combined with a wheelbase of 2,160 mm; top speed is 30 km/h.
The unusually narrow track points to a design built for narrow row crops, where an ordinary, wider tractor would not fit between the rows of plants. In such use the stepless Vario transmission allows very fine, jerk-free speed adjustment, for instance when moving off with mounted care or harvesting implements, without interrupting the low and frequently changing working speeds typical of row-crop work with gear changes.
When buying such a narrow Vario tractor secondhand, the condition of the stepless transmission unit matters most, as repairs are costlier than with a conventional gearbox, along with possible damage to the narrow bodywork and mudguards from contact with branches or vines in tight row spacing. Also worth checking are the cooling system, hydraulic connections and the compatibility of older seals with biodiesel-blended fuel.
