Trailers of this weight class carry construction machinery, plant components and other oversized goods that regular semi-trailers can no longer take; such combinations generally require an abnormal-load permit for road use and are usually run with an escort vehicle. Operators turn to them when neither a standard semi-trailer nor a low-loader reaches the required axle-load distribution or payload.

On used heavy-load trailers, the condition of the frame welds for fatigue cracks matters, the function of hydraulically steered axles, tyres and brakes across the high axle count, ramps and loading equipment, and the history of abnormal-load permits and inspections.
