Trailers of this size serve trades, commerce and agriculture as single-, tandem- and triple-axle trailers for building materials, machinery, scaffolding and general cargo in the mid payload range between one and nearly ten tonnes gross weight; the variety of types reflects a broad, modular range for different bodies.

On a used trailer, the condition of frame and axles, brakes and trailer coupling, sides and load floor count, and on the heavier types also the overrun brake device; rust on load-bearing parts is the most common fault. Spare parts are supplied by the manufacturer and the general commercial-trailer trade. Which coupling fits depends on the nose weight: light single-axle trailers usually run a ball coupling, the heavier types a drawbar eye with pin coupling; on the multi-axle versions, the overrun device's brake cables and the weld seams at the axle mounting are also worth checking for wear.
