Eicher ED series (1948–1959) – the first post-war Eichers: ED 13 to ED 33, the number as hp, /I and /II as upgrade levels, air-cooled one- and two-cylinders at 1,500 rpm, 10 to 24 kW

ED stands for Eicher Diesel, and the ED series is the programme with which the Eicher brothers of Forstern motorised the German smallholder after the war: one- and two-cylinder tractors with air-cooled engines of their own manufacture, which Eicher had built since 1936 as one of the first makers – no radiator, no frost damage, no water pump. The type logic: the number gives the output in hp – ED 13, ED 14, ED 16 and ED 20 the single-cylinders, ED 26, ED 30 and ED 33 the twins – /I and /II the upgrade levels, ED 110 the export version that ran abroad as the E 17. The low rated speeds of 1,500 to 1,600 rpm and the displacements of 1.3 to 2.9 litres show the design: slow-running, large-volume engines with high torque as they shaped the time before the high-speed era.

The register lists 10 versions with 9.5 to 24.2 kW (14 to 33 hp), 1,298 to 2,851 cm³ with one or two cylinders, unladen weights from 1,110 to 2,170 kg, lengths from 2,420 to 3,168 mm, widths from 1,500 to 1,580 mm and heights from 1,520 to 1,815 mm; the recorded linkage lifts 625 kg.

The ED Eichers competed with Lanz Bulldog, Fendt Dieselross and Hanomag for the 10 to 20 hectare farm; air cooling became the trademark Eicher kept to the end.

Used EDs are the classic Eicher collector tractors; when buying, originality, the condition of cylinder, piston and blower, injection pump, gearbox and brakes and parts supply through the Eicher club scene are what count.
