Eckerlin LK 16 – EU category O4 trailer with a 16,000 kg gross weight, 4,500 kg unladen weight, 11,500 kg payload, 7.30 m length and a 3.30 m axle spread
At a gross weight of 16,000 kg, the LK 16 sits just above the 10-tonne threshold and so falls into EU trailer category O4, the heavy trailers fitted as standard with compressed-air brake systems. Compared with the heaviest members of this category, the LK 16 is a comparatively compact trailer.

At an unladen weight of 4,500 kg, the payload comes to 11,500 kg, a good 2.5 times the trailer's own weight. The 7.30 m length and 3.30 m axle spread point to a short, manoeuvrable design, useful for work on tight sites or in yards with limited turning space. At 2.48 m width, the LK 16 stays just under the usual European envelope of 2.55 m for road vehicles.
Towing combinations in this weight class require a category CE licence. The compressed-air brake is load-dependent, so braking deceleration matches the current loading state, and the compact dimensions make manoeuvring easier compared with the long semi-trailers and tandem-axle trailers in the same weight class.
When buying used, check the axle bearings and their mounting, the tightness of the air lines and couplings, the frame around the axle mount for corrosion and cracking, and the coupling eye for wear in the eye itself and in its bearing. The short axle spread also means the tyres take more sideways load when manoeuvring, so uneven tread wear is worth a close look.
