The DA 13 was built between 1936 and 1937 as a small agricultural tractor with a single-cylinder diesel engine. Small single-cylinder diesels of this kind were, in the 1930s, among the first tractor engines to move from the previously common kerosene or petrol operation to compression ignition, and were especially attractive to smaller farms because of their low fuel consumption.

The single-cylinder engine has a displacement of 696 cc and produces 9.6 kW (13 hp) at 1,500 rpm; it is cooled on the thermosiphon principle without a separate water pump. The DA 13 is 2,550 mm long, 1,500 mm wide and 1,600 mm high, with a wheelbase of 1,800 mm and a weight of 1,250 kg. Its top speed is 14 km/h.
A single-cylinder diesel of this size runs smoothly and evenly thanks to its large, heavy flywheel, even at the low 1,500 rpm of its era's design, and was robust enough for daily field work with little maintenance. Thermosiphon cooling has no circulating pump and relies solely on the density difference between warm and cold water, which keeps the design simple but requires an adequate water level and unobstructed flow through the radiator.
When buying such an old single-cylinder diesel, first check whether the water circuit is free of deposits, since thermosiphon cooling without a pump is more sensitive to blockages. Beyond that, check the condition of the injection pump and nozzle, the clutch and gearbox, and rust on the frame and sheet metal after some ninety years. Parts for such a rare tractor can practically only be sourced from collectors and specialist restoration workshops.
