DAF is known chiefly as a truck maker from Eindhoven, but for decades it also built bus chassis that independent bodybuilders such as Den Oudsten, Berkhof or Jonckheere fitted with their own bodywork. Chassis like these formed the technical basis for long-distance and touring coaches, while the body and interior fit-out came from specialised bodybuilders – a business model common across Europe well into the 1990s, before integral one-piece coach construction took over. DAF chassis were regarded as robust and suited to long-distance service, with comparatively high gross weight ratings for three-axle versions.
On a used DAF bus chassis it is worth checking the frame and axle mountings, as corrosion on cross-members and spring hangers is common on vehicles of this age; the brakes, air suspension and drive shafts should be checked against service records. Engine and gearbox parts are available through the general commercial-vehicle trade, while body parts are usually only available from the relevant bodybuilder or the used-parts market.
