Since Case's takeover in 1996, Steyr has built tractors in St. Valentin as part of CNH and shares technical platforms with Case IH; the Kompakt range bundles smaller four-cylinder models such as the 4095 Kompakt and 485 Kompakt for operations too small for the larger Steyr ranges. The type number roughly reflects the power class. Like Steyr's other ranges, the Kompakt line is built in St. Valentin for the European market and benefits from shared development work within the CNH group.

The register lists 2 variants at 60 to 73 kW from four-cylinder diesels of 3,400 to 4,500 cc, kerb weights of 3,050 to 3,600 kg, a lift capacity of 4,400 kg, lengths of 3,568 to 4,241 mm, a width of 2,300 mm, heights of 2,400 to 2,495 mm and a rated 2,300 rpm; one model is also approved for biodiesel.
In this power class Steyr competes with its own sister brands Case IH and New Holland as well as with Fendt, John Deere and Deutz-Fahr; the Kompakt range targets mixed and smaller farms in the European market.
Buying one of these more modern four-cylinder tractors, the engine and transmission electronics matter, along with the condition of the hydraulic pump and pto, the tightness of the common-rail or injection system, and rust on the frame and mounting points; parts run through the CNH dealer network for Steyr and Case IH, and with heavy front-loader use the mounting console and lift arms are also worth a close look.
